Why Women Need Strength Training — And It Has Nothing to Do With Losing 5kg

The fitness industry has spent decades telling women to shrink. Here is why that is the wrong goal entirely — and what actually changes when you train with intention.

Walk into almost any gym in Berlin and you will find the same thing: rows of cardio machines, a few group classes, and somewhere in the corner, a weight section that most women were never really invited into.

The message has been consistent for years: if you are a woman and you want to get fit, you need to tone up, trim down, and lose those last few kilos.

We are going to push back on that.

Not because weight does not matter at all. But because it is the wrong starting point — and the women who train at Escapist would agree.

The Real Reason Women Stop Training

It is not laziness. It is not lack of motivation. And it is almost never lack of time.

It is that most training environments were not built for them. The goals were wrong. The feedback was wrong. The community was wrong. And eventually — usually around week eight of whatever programme they were following — the whole thing stopped feeling worth it.

Sound familiar?

The women who walk through our door have usually tried at least two or three things before. A gym membership they used for six weeks. A class they went to twice. An app that felt impersonal after three days. They are not unfit. They are under-coached.

“The goal is not to lose weight. The goal is to feel good enough to show up fully in your own life.”

That shift — from body composition as the outcome to capacity as the outcome — changes everything about how you train, how consistently you show up, and how long you stay.

What Strength Training Actually Does for Women

Not what the fitness industry tells you. What the science actually shows.

It protects your bones long-term

Women lose bone density faster than men, particularly after 35. Strength training — specifically resistance training with load — is one of the most effective ways to maintain and build bone density. This is not a future concern. It is something you are either investing in now or not.

It changes your relationship with energy

Most women who start consistent strength training report the same thing within 4–6 weeks: they have more energy. Not because they are sleeping more or taking supplements. Because their body has been trained to produce and manage energy more efficiently. The mitochondrial adaptation that happens with regular training is real — and it shows up in your workday, not just your workout.

It builds the kind of confidence that does not depend on a number

There is a specific kind of self-assurance that comes from knowing your body is capable. From lifting something heavy. From completing something difficult. It does not come from a scale. It comes from doing — and that is what training gives you.

It regulates stress in a way that cardio alone cannot

Chronic stress — the kind that comes with a demanding career, constant decision-making, and a schedule that never really empties — lives in the body. Strength training releases it physically in a way that a long run simply does not replicate. The hormonal response is different. The nervous system reset is different. And the result — that particular kind of calm after a hard session — is something our members talk about more than almost anything else.

Why Most Gyms Get This Wrong

The problem is not the exercise. The problem is the environment.

Big gyms are built for volume, not for people. When you are managing 2,000 members, you cannot know everyone’s name, let alone their goals, their schedule constraints, or what they tried before that did not work. The result is a generic experience that feels fine for a few weeks and then becomes invisible.

Large group classes are motivating until they are not. When there are 25 people in a room, the coach is managing the room. They are not watching you. They are not adjusting the movement for your specific situation. They are keeping the energy up and the clock moving. That works for some people. For most women who have had inconsistent training histories, it is not enough.

CrossFit has an image problem it does not fully deserve. The association — loud music, heavy barbells, people moving fast — scares off exactly the people who would benefit most. The reality of what good CrossFit coaching looks like is almost nothing like the perception. But the perception is powerful, and we understand why it puts people off.

Hyrox has a different problem. It is built around an event, a race, a performance outcome. That is genuinely motivating for a specific type of person. But for someone who wants to feel better, sleep better, and have more capacity in their daily life — training for a race format is solving the wrong problem.

What We Do Differently — The Momentum Program

The Momentum Program is our answer to all of the above.

It is not CrossFit in the way most people picture it. It is not a large group class. It is not a generic programme downloaded from an app.

The Momentum Program

Small group coaching — a maximum of 6 people per session, which means your coach actually sees you.

Built around your schedule — two structured sessions per week plus unlimited access to Club Classes. Designed for people with full lives, not people who can train every day.

Coached progression — every session builds on the last. Nothing is random. Your coach knows where you started and where you are going.

No intimidation, no competition, no performance pressure — the only person you are measuring yourself against is the version of you that walked in on day one.

The women who go through the Momentum Program are not here to compete. They are here because they want something that actually works — for their schedule, their goals, and the long term.

Most of them stay for years.

The Question Worth Asking

Not “how do I lose 5kg?”

But: what would it feel like to have a body that works with you instead of against you?

To walk into a difficult week at work and know that your training is one of the things holding you together rather than one more thing you are behind on.

To feel genuinely strong — not in a performance sense, but in the sense of being capable. Present. In your own skin.

That is what consistent, well-coached strength training does. Not in six weeks. Over time. With the right environment and the right method behind it.

That is what we are here for.
